More on the Foundry
A picture of the foundry at night time realy shows that there is definetly fire in the hole.
Home made lifting tounges. They work quite well. these are made from 2 pieces of 1/2 black iron water pipe and welded together. these were outlined in Lionels book.
LMC QUAD
As I stated earlier the reason for starting this hobby was to attemp to make my own castings and design my own motors. I have started with the cyl first . Here is how the first one came out. It took about 2 weeks and 4 patterns to get the first one. While it is not perfect it is a start.
Here is the 4th pattern that I made. It looks like this one may actually work. It is a split patter and indexed with dowel pins to make it easier to mold up.
The pattern is removed and WOW!! I have fins. This is a major accomplishment since this is the first time I have been able to remove the patter and have the fins intact.
This looks promising. I have removed from the sand. If you look close you can see the core sand still in the center of the cyl.
The core has been cleaned out and looks pretty good at this point.
And the finished part after putting on the lathe, boring the center to size and facing off the top and bottom. This cyl is ready for the cast iron sleeve to be pressed in.
More to Come
